First in Taiwan! New Taipei City Government’s AI Data Center and Digital Twin Facility Wins Silver at the London Design Awards

    New Taipei City Government has once again earned international recognition. The AI Data Center and Digital Twin Facility at the Second Administrative Center, proactively developed by the New Taipei City Government Information Management Center, has won a Silver Award in the Interior Design category at the prestigious London Design Awards, organized by the International Awards Associate (IAA). The award recognizes the City Government’s innovative achievement in seamlessly integrating advanced technology infrastructure with modern spatial design and aesthetics.
 
    With this achievement, New Taipei City Government becomes the first government agency in Taiwan to win a London Design Award for a high-density AI computing data center and digitally resilient infrastructure. The award demonstrates how the public sector can successfully combine highly advanced technology operations with contemporary spatial aesthetics, establishing a new model for sustainable technology facilities in government. It also represents international recognition of New Taipei City Government’s achievements in both public-sector interior design and IT infrastructure, while highlighting the City’s alignment with global standards in AI infrastructure, digital governance, smart city development, and urban resilience.

    Breaking away from the conventional image of enclosed and purely functional data centers, the New Taipei City Government Information Management Center designed the facility around the principles of order, transparency, and efficiency. Carefully arranged server racks, hot- and cold-aisle configurations, raised flooring, and extended sightlines from the control room create a spatial rhythm reminiscent of a precision-engineered system. The ceiling is finished in matte black to retain an industrial and technological character, while transforming the dense network of cables and pipelines into an integral element of the contemporary design. Fire-resistant reinforced glass partitions between the control room and corridors provide sound insulation and enhanced safety while maintaining visual transparency. Together, these design elements transform a traditionally cold and enclosed data center into a sophisticated public-sector facility for smart technology and digital governance.
 
    Amid the global rise of generative AI, the City Government seized the opportunity presented by the construction of the Second Administrative Center in Sanchong District to establish a highly scalable AI infrastructure and a geographically separated backup data center. The facility is designed to continuously enhance administrative efficiency and the quality of public services. It incorporates a high-availability architecture and Digital Twin technology, with an 8-kilometer dedicated fiber-optic connection enabling real-time synchronization and seamless failover with the City Government’s existing data center. This gives the data infrastructure a “dual heartbeat,” ensuring that even in the event of natural or human-caused disasters, municipal services and citizen data can be rapidly restored and maintained. The system significantly minimizes the risks of service disruptions and data loss.
 
    To address the substantial cooling requirements generated by high-density AI computing, the project also aligns with the United Nations SDGs, particularly SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities; and SDG 13: Climate Action. Chen Fu-Tien, Director of the New Taipei City Government Information Management Center, said that the City Government will continue to build on low-carbon, high-efficiency, and highly resilient computing resources to further optimize smart government services and provide citizens with a safer, more seamless, and sustainable smart living experience.Silver Award in the Interior Design category at the London Design Awards
