Gear up for the summer showdown in the street dance community! The annual “2024 New Taipei FUN Street International Street Dance Competition” elevates the event to an international stage for the first time. Co-organized by the New Taipei City Government Youth Department and Banqiao District Office, this year’s competition boasts increased prize money across all categories, with cash prizes awarded to finalists! The competition features three main categories: “Youth Dance Crew Competition,” “All Style 1 ON 1,” and “Breaking Solo Battle.” The champion of the “All Style 1 ON 1” will secure a coveted spot at the prestigious CIDC (Cheonan International Street Dance Championship) in Korea, including a travel package with round-trip tickets, accommodation, and classes. Registration is open until August 3rd. All street dance enthusiasts are welcomed to join the event on August 10th and 11th at Banqiao Gymnasium in New Taipei City to witness amazing dance performances!
Now in its 16th year, the “New Taipei FUN Street Dance Competition” has become a flagship event in Taiwan’s street dance scene. Renowned dance groups and individual dancers like Taiwan’s professional dance group TC (Top Coalition), popular street dancer Well Lai, Japan’s B-Girl Ayumi Fukushima, and the talented Japanese dancer KYOKA all launched their careers on this very stage. To create an international-grade street dance competition, the New Taipei City Government has upgraded the event this year, expanding it into the “2024 New Taipei FUN Street International Street Dance Competition”.
The competition boasts significantly boosted rewards, with finalists receiving cash prizes ranging from 2,000 to 3,500 TWD. The event also connects with major international street dance competitions. Renowned Korean breaker Bboy Madman will be one of the judges for the Breaking Solo Battle. The champion of the “All Style 1 ON 1 ” will qualify for the CIDC (Cheonan International Street Dance Championship) in Korea and receive a free round-trip ticket, accommodation, and classes as part of the prize package.
New Taipei City Deputy Mayor Liu He-Ran stated that Breaking will debut as an Olympic event at the 2024 Paris Olympics. With long-term investment in street dance talents, New Taipei City is committed to promoting street dance and elevating this competition to an international level, aiming to establish a globally recognized street dance event in New Taipei. Young street dance enthusiasts across Taiwan are encouraged to register and compete, showcasing Taiwan’s talent on the international stage. Interested audiences are invited to join the event on August 10th and 11th at Banqiao Gymnasium. Additionally, the Cultural Affairs Department will create a street culture hub for New Taipei’s youth in the Fuzhong area and launch a summer-exclusive “Street School” in late June, offering comprehensive courses in rap, graffiti, and street dance. We invite everyone to come and to explore.
Lin Geng-Hong, President of the Taiwan Street Dance Culture Promotion Association and well-known professional dancer “Gang Yi,” mentioned that Taiwan’s street dance movement has flourished over the past two decades, nurturing many dancers capable of competing internationally. He hopes the “New Taipei FUN Street International Street Dance Competition” inspires young dancers to embark on their journey to international recognition. Join the celebration of street dance and electrify New Taipei City!
Fusing competition and art to promote street dance culture, the New Taipei City Youth Department will invite Chen Bo-Jun, the head of the 2024 Paris Olympics Breaking event, to hold a “Breaking to the Olympics” lecture at Liming Technical University in July. The lecture will explore the evolution of street dance from subculture to mainstream recognition and the dancers’ advocacy that led to Breaking becoming an official Olympic sport. Interested individuals are encouraged to follow the New Taipei City Youth Department’s website and social media for updates.
The press conference will feature a captivating performance by last year’s Youth Dance Crew Competition champions “HRC BEAST CREW,” alongside teams from Juang Jing Vocational High School and Nan Chiang Vocational High School. They delivered a high-energy and creative dance routine to heat up the stage.
